The 24th annual international festival of contemporary puppet theatre for children and adults Bábkarská Bystrica 2024 is scheduled for 1 – 6 October 2024.

Freedom is Art is the leitmotif of the Festival to be held in four theatre and non-theatre spaces in the city of Banská Bystrica. It will present unique international and Slovak puppet theatre companies for all age groups from 7 European countries and Israel. Celebrated ensembles from the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Ukraine, and Slovakia accepted our invitation. Those from Denmark, Finland, Germany and Israel will perform in Slovakia for the first time.

BB 24 is a celebration of contemporary puppet theatre themes for all ages.

BB 24 is an inimitable event dedicated to the metamorphoses of puppet theatre that has been growing at an unprecedentedly free and creative pace for the past decades, working along the intersections of a whole range of art – from visual, musical, verbal, movement, and film, to innovative methods using materials and animation of inanimate matter.

The unprecedented development of puppet theatre highlights the importance of the Festival leitmotif: Freedom is Art.

Further to our initiatives on informal learning and communication with the public, the event will be broadcast life, featuring some of influential thinkers addressing the theme of freedom is art – art is freedom under the auspices of Café Europe and the Representation of the European Commission in Slovakia.

Off-programme Festival events also bring a novelty: the first outdoor theatre – art installation Man, Puppet and Space presenting artefacts by students and lecturers of the Department of Intermedia and Digital Media, Faculty of Fine Arts of the Academy of Arts in Banská Bystrica. The installation is complemented by open-air performances in the garden of the Central Slovak Gallery.

The Festival also hosts Ukrainian students from Department of Puppetry of the Kyiv National Ivan Karpovych Karpenko-Karyi Theatre, Cinema and Television University, for observation stay of during the entire event.

The novelty of BB 24 is the jazz club Hogo Fogo: during the Festival days it will become the Festival club offering evening concerts of singing actresses and actors.

FESTIVAL FOR ADULTS
THROUGH THE LENS OF WOMEN & CURRENT SOCIO-HISTORICAL THEMES

The Festival programme for adults (or for adulty and youth) presents 9 stage productions from 4 countries: the Czech Republic (5), Finland (1), Israel (1) and Slovakia (2).

In connection with the Festival leitmotif Freedom is Art, we gave space to productions addressing socio-cultural and historical overlaps. The lens of women represents the second distinctive line of performances for adults and youth. For the first time ever, we have decided to draw attention to the lives and attitudes of women towards the above themes, to focus spotlight on female protagonists and, at the same time, the creative individuals behind the performances. Each performance is followed by a Q&A with the creative team focusing on the content of the production. The discussions will be chaired by Lukáš Kopas, Marián Pecko and Daniela Brezániová. Grus Grus Teatteri is a multi-genre theatre group founded in 2007. It was originally formed to administer a tour project Hugo Simberg’s Wings created by the Finnish stage actor, director and dramaturge Ville Kurki. The group now creates performances in places where you might not expect a theatre performance to appear. In the past, they produced shows in the Finnkino Kinopalatsi cinema, in a shopping centre, in a bus Föli, different museums and even in kitchens. For the audience, such a specific approach to theatre opens up the possibility to experience and see familiar everyday places in a new light – for art, this means that some element of the environment and the selected place becomes part of the work. Each place has its own history, architecture, illusion, characteristic scent and soundscape. All these elements become part of the performance: something with which the script and the actor must create a relationship. Their main goal is to strengthen dialogue and diversity between different genres of performing arts. The group features at numerous puppetry festivals. We welcome them to Bábkarská Bystrica for the first time.
